The quickest way to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows is to open a browser-based converter such as Pixvilo's HEIC to JPG converter, add your photos, and download the JPG copies. Nothing needs to be installed, and the conversion runs on your own computer.
If you prefer built-in Windows tools, you can also use the Photos app once HEIF support is installed. Both methods are explained below.
Why Windows struggles with HEIC
HEIC is the default photo format on recent iPhones and iPads. It keeps quality high while using less storage than JPG. Windows 10 and 11 do not always include the codec needed to read it, so double-clicking a HEIC file may show an error, a blank thumbnail, or a prompt to visit the Microsoft Store.
Method 1: Convert in your browser with Pixvilo
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
- Drag your HEIC photos onto the Convert from card, or click it to choose files.
- Adjust the JPG quality slider if you want smaller files. The default works well for most photos.
- Click Convert.
- Download the result. A single photo saves as a JPG; several photos download together as one ZIP file.
Your photos are processed locally in the browser and are not uploaded to a server. Very large batches depend on how much memory your computer has, so convert a few dozen at a time if you run into problems.
Method 2: Use the Windows Photos app
- Install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Some HEIC files also need the HEVC Video Extensions, which may be a paid download in some regions.
- Open the HEIC photo in the Photos app.
- Choose Save as (or Edit, then Save as copy in some versions).
- Pick JPG as the file type and save.
This works well for a handful of photos, but it converts one file at a time.
Method 3: Stop your iPhone from creating HEIC files
If you regularly move photos to Windows, you can change the format on your iPhone:
- Open Settings and tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Choose Most Compatible.
New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing photos stay in HEIC, and JPG files use more storage on the phone.
Which method should you use?
- Many photos at once: use the browser converter and download a ZIP.
- Occasional single photos: the Photos app is fine once the extensions are installed.
- Going forward: switch the iPhone to Most Compatible.
