On a Mac, the simplest built-in way to convert HEIC to JPG is to open the photo in Preview, choose File > Export, and select JPEG. For several photos at once, a Finder Quick Action or a browser converter such as Pixvilo is faster.
macOS reads HEIC natively, so the challenge is usually sharing: many upload forms, Windows users, and older apps still expect JPG.
Method 1: Preview (built in)
- Double-click the HEIC photo to open it in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG and adjust the quality slider.
- Click Save.
To convert several photos, select them all in Finder, open them in Preview, select all thumbnails in the sidebar, and then use File > Export Selected Images. In the export dialog, click Options to choose JPEG.
Method 2: Finder Quick Action (macOS Monterey and later)
- Select one or more HEIC files in Finder.
- Right-click and choose Quick Actions > Convert Image.
- Choose JPEG, pick an image size, and click Convert to JPEG.
The JPG copies are saved next to the originals.
Method 3: Photos app
- Select the photos in your library.
- Choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos.
- Set Photo Kind to JPEG and click Export.
Method 4: Convert in your browser
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox.
- Drop your HEIC photos onto the Convert from card.
- Click Convert.
- Download a single JPG, or all results together as a ZIP.
This is handy on a shared or managed Mac, or when you also need other formats such as HEIC to PNG. Files are processed in the browser rather than uploaded.
Tips
- Keep the originals: converting creates new files and leaves your HEIC photos unchanged.
- For graphics that need sharp edges or editing without further compression, consider PNG instead. See PNG vs JPG for the trade-offs.
